AttaBoy Plumbing or Big Box Store for Best Price for Water Heater?

Monday, January 30, 2012 by Scott McCracken

Water HeaterWe get a lot of phone calls from people "
shopping" to find the best price to clear a clogged drain, install a sump pump or to have their old water heater replaced.  Because shopping around is so common, I wanted to take a little space here to talk about getting the best buy for a water heater.

First, you need to notice I did not say "lowest" price, and for good reason. Lowest price is definitely not synonymous with best price.  I have often encountered a homeowner who was frustrated because they have purchased a water heater that seemed like a good deal at the time only to experience a great deal of frustration when it comes time to service it.
Probably the most common senario goes like this:

1.  A thrifty-minded homeowner purchases a water heater from a "big box store".  They get it installed and everything's hunky dory.

2.  One day the homeowner wakes up and discovers he or she has to take a cold shower and there's little or no hot water from the faucets.  So they call the store where they purchased their water heater and find out that they will have to call the manufacturer to rectify the issue. After talking with tech support on the other
side of the globe to troubleshoot the issue it is eventually determined that the gas valve or burner assembly that is causing the problem is under warranty (this time), but will have to be shipped to them since they are no longer dealing with the big box store, but the water heater manufacturer.

3.  The now angry customer does not want to wait for the part and calls a local plumbing company, like AttaBoy Plumbing, to get their water heater up and running again quickly.  Overall, there ends up being no real cost savings and a disgruntled big box store customer.

The next time you are considering purchasing a plumbing fixture like a water softener, garage disposal, sewage pump or yes, water heater, your best  price is going to be AttaBoy Plumbing.  We major in customer service in Indianapolis, Broadripple, Greenwood, Brownsburg, Fishers, and Carmel.

AttaBoy's Tankless Water Heaters

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 by Scott McCracken
Navien  As an Indianapolis plumbing company we always get our share of calls for clogged drains, slow toilets, sump pump problems, and garbage disposals not working.  But we also get a lot of inquiries about tankless water heaters.

A tankless water heater is a product that generates hot water immediately by heating water upon demand. That basically means that when you open a hot water faucet the tankless unit’s burners ignite to heat the water you're using as it passes through the pipes in the water heater. When you are finished and turn the faucet off the heater senses the stop of the water flow and immediately turns itself off.

The advantage of the tankless heater is that there is an operating cost savings over the lifetime of the unit because it doesn’t have to heat and re-heat a tank of stored water as with a conventional water heater. It also gives virtually unlimited hot water if the unit is sized correctly for your home. Additionally it takes up less space and uses less energy. The disadvantage is the higher initial investment costs.

If you would like to see if a tankless water heater would be right for you, just call AttaBoy Plumbing.  We are not only downtown plumbers, but we service Fishers, Carmel, Greenwood, Lawrence and Avon.

Fishers Water Softener Explodes

Thursday, July 21, 2011 by Richard Behney
AttaBoy Plumbing Co - Fishers PlumbersNow, it certainly is a rare thing for a water softener tank to "explode" but, that is exactly what happened to a customer who called AttaBoy for help yesterday.  It turns out that this Fishers customer's name brand, budget grade water softener tank (not supplied or installed by AttaBoy Plumbing or another professional plumbing contractor) had ruptured under pressure litterally spewing water and resin all over the area and bending 3/4" copper water lines in the concrete slab.  So much for saving a buck.

Though the tank was covered under warranty and the supplier was willing to not charge for installation labor, this Fishers customer insisted that they wanted "their" plumber to install a new professional grade water softener.  And, from what I understand from our plumber, is that the other water softener company is reimbursing the customer for the new professional grade water softener professionally installed by AttaBoy Plumbing .  My hat is off to the water softener company for fitting the bill for the new softener, though, I believe it was smart business because the softener was less expensive then paying for the clean up.  The Fishers customers got a high quality, dependable water softener from AttaBoy with no worries at no cost, though, they do have  a pretty fair mess to clean up.  And, my favorite part, AttaBoy got a new happy customer! Hey Indianapolis, Zionsville, Carmel, Noblesville, Geist, Avon, and Greenwood; Call, Click, or Chat now to have an AttaBoy water softener expert examine your water conditioning needs.

Indianapolis Plumbing Customer Exclaims: "I Should Have Called AttaBoy!"

Monday, July 11, 2011 by Richard Behney
AttaBoy Plumbing Company - Indianapolis PlumberI had a message on my voice mail from a person who stated only that they were a customer and wished for me to return their call (no name or reason given).  When I returned the gentlemen's call he said with a smile in his voice, "I bet you think I have called to complain".  I said something like "I sure hope you don't have a complaint with AttaBoy."  He went on to explain who he was and how he decided to "try" AttaBoy Plumbing but was not expecting us to fulfill on our claim of "Big City Service...Small Town Price" based on his experience with other plumbing companies.  But he went on...I got to listen for almost ten minutes as he raved about AttaBoy Plumbing as compared to those "other guys".  I have to admit that I asked him if he would consider writing an online review.  Though I will admit that we are not always perfect or may not be the cheapest plumbing company you are looking for (we can not compete with "I have a friend of a friend's second cousin once removed who knows a guy that will do it for nothing" scenerio), I am proud to say that overwhelmingly customers who speak with me have the kind of reaction like this Indianapolis gentlemen and I am confident that whether you live in Fishers, Carmel, Geist, Noblesville, Zionsville, Avon, or Greenwood; you will not find a more "bang for your buck" when it comes to installing or repairing water heaters, sump pumps, toilets, dripping faucets, small water or drain line leaks all the way to replacing a main water or sewer line.  Like this gentlemen, "try" us and you will see why AttaBoy is an Indianapolis Best Value!

All Indianapolis Plumbers On Deck!

Wednesday, April 20, 2011 by Richard Behney
AttaBoy Plumbing Company - Indianapolis PlumbersYesterday was one of those days that I know all plumbing companies in Indianapolis (and Fishers, Carmel, and Zionsville for that matter) had to be very busy, I know that AttaBoy Plumbing was extremely busy; our plumbers were doing double duty and overtime.  That extreme weather front that went through Indy not only brought a lot of rain (that's an understatement), but water heater and sump pump failures.  I have explained before in other blogs how a low weather pressure (usually associated with storms) adversly effects a home's plumbing system...one major componet being your hot water heater.  Basically, the expansion pressure caused by the low weather front adversly effects the mechanical...so if your water heater is on the verge of leaking...it is literally pushed to the breaking (or leaking) point by the weather.  And as for sump pumps...well, all the rain pushes them to their breaking point.  So next time you see storms and heavy rain forecasted...give AttaBoy Plumbing a call and be on the front side of a plumbing problem or flooded basement.  And tell'em Richard (that's me, your neighbor and owner of AttaBoy Plumbing Company) said take an additional 10% off for being so smart and proactive!

Indianapolis is Leaking Gas - Plumbers Can Help

Friday, April 15, 2011 by Richard Behney
AttaBoy Plumbing Comany - Indianapolis PlumbersNatural gas that is.  AttaBoy Plumbing receives and performs more gas leak repairs in Indianapolis than Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, and Zionsville combined.  The main reseason is simply that the gas piping is older.  What starts to happen is the the old black steel piping and fittings once used for gas installations in Indianapolis start to pit and decay literally from the inside out.  Finally, a consumer will detect a leak by smelling that natural gas smell (which is not natural, the ordor is injected in so we humans can detect it with our noses) or by a high gas bill.  If you call the gas company they will come out and simply shut you off and tell you to call a plumber.  Plumbers are licensed to install and repair gas line leaks.  AttaBoy Plumbing plumbers are gas fix experts.  Call, Click, or Chat now for gas repair service today!

Are You Looking for an Indianapolis Plumber?

Thursday, April 14, 2011 by Richard Behney
AttaBoy Plumbing Company - Indianapolis Plumber"Are you looking for an Indianapolis plumber"?  I asked a customer calling in for plumbing service this morning.  It turns out this customer lived and was calling from Chicago!  They had run an internet search inquiry for plumbers and AttaBoy Plumbing came up as an option.  I love the internet...I still am amazed at where technology is today.  When I started plumbing in the early eighties plumbers still ran cast iron and customers used something called the yellow pages to find Indianapolis plumbing companies.  I remember when fax machines came out...that's a blog for another day.  Bottom line: if you are looking for an Indianapolis plumber or plumbing company, AttaBoy Plumbing is your local-family owned hoosier plumbing answer...sorry Chicago.

How do you find a Plumber?

Sunday, December 26, 2010 by Laura Behney
Say your water heater is leaking or all of your drains are clogged or you are in need of having a gas leak repaired.  Maybe your basement is flooded from all of the melting snow and your sump pump or back up has failed or you finally are going to get a new water softener and get rid of that hard water. You know you need a plumber, but where do you find one you can trust?

Just a few short years ago, we all "Let our fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages", but times have changed and the majority of us turn to our computers or smart phones and let our fingers do the clicking.  We all know that we can find just about anything (and then some) on the Internet, and that includes plumbers.

Finding a good plumber online is takes some time.  Anybody can put up a website and get themselves listed online.  Check out the reviews for the plumbing company on the major search engines.   Positive reviews written by actual customers are a great way to feel confident about a local plumber.  While it's not possible to please all the customers all the time, make sure a large majority of the reviews are positive.

Also check out the plumbing company's website for money saving coupons.  Some companies offer coupons, but you have to sign up for their newsletter first.  AttaBoy has a link to numerous coupons right from our website and these days all of us could use some savings!

So whether you're in Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Broad Ripple or Zionsville, don't drag out that five pound phone book, just pop open your laptop and get Googling!  Or better yet, just call AttaBoy Plumbing, Heating and Cooling.  You'll be glad you did!

AttaBoy Plumbing Company TV Commercials

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 by Laura Behney

AttaBoy Plumbing Co. - PlumberWe’ve had a lot of fun over the years, conveying our message on central Indiana (including IndianapolisFishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Greenwood Geist, Avon and Zionsville) radio and television. We tried to make leaking faucets, water heaters, drain clogs, broken water lines and toilet problems fun, well as fun as they can be. (Hey, our plumbers think they are fun!)

Some of our commercials have been "retired", so I thought maybe some of you might miss seeing some of these classics or just needed a fun plumbing pick-me-up, so here's a link to all of commercials.  (But beware, you'll be humming our song all day!)

As a Plumbing Company, how did AttaBoy not know?

Friday, October 29, 2010 by Buddy the Plumber
How could we NOT have known that October is National Toilet Tank Repair Month?

It's true!  So in honor of National Toilet Tank Repair, we want to share some very information about toilets.  Did you know that toilet leaks can waste as much as four to five gallons of water per minute and cost you up to $100.00 per month in increased water and wastewater bills? Toilet leaks occur in two ways and are often very difficult to detect.

First:

The most common toilet leak and often hardest to detect is caused by a deteriorated or defected flush valve (flapper) ball at the bottom of the toilet tank. If the flapper or ball valve does not seat properly and form a water tight seal, water will leak around it into the toilet bowl. Often, this leak will occur without being heard. To test for this type of leak, add a few drops of food color or place a colored dye tablet (available from many hardware stores or possibly your water utility) in the toilet after it has stopped filling.

Second:

The second most-common type of leak is caused by an improperly adjusted or broken fill (ball cock) valve. If the float is set too high or if the shut-off valve fails to close completely, water will continue to enter the tank and flow into the overflow tube. This type of leak can be seen simply by taking the tank top off and observing if water is flowing into the overflow tube once the tank is full.

Of course, if you have any toilet trouble, call your local plumber, AttaBoy Plumbing and our plumbers can fix and repair all of your toilet problems and provide you superior service at the same time.

Along with this very important toilet tank awareness, October is also:

WOW, Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville.....I'm sure you are wondering HOW you have made it through October without knowing this.  In the future, we will do our best to keep you aware of these important national holidays.

Don't worry about your plumbing on vacation!

Monday, October 11, 2010 by Laura Behney

I just can't show this picture enough! It was taken in Michigan, however, could easily be a picture taken in Carmel, Geist, Fishers, Greenwood, Noblesville, Indianapolis, etc.

It is a picture of a garage that had a water line burst while the homeowners were on vacation.  After the water line reputured, unfortunately, temperatures dropped below freezing turning the garage into a frozen nightmare.  Not the scene that you want to find returning from a relaxing vacation!

As the holiday season is fast approaching and folks are planning vacations, don't forget to plan on protecting your home while you are gone by taking the following easy precautions:
  • Turn off the main water shut-off valve to your home.
  • Open cabinet doors of all bathroom vanities and kitchen cupboards to allow warm air to heat the pipes under the sink.
  • Secure windows, crawlspace openings and basement doors to keep the cold away from your water pipes.
  • Remove hoses from outside hose spigots.
By doing these few things, you will be able to enjoy that well-deserved vacation and not even think about calling a plumber or about AttaBoy Plumbing Company!  But you could send us a postcard if you want! :)

Low Water Pressure in Indianapolis, Carmel or Fishers?

Wednesday, September 29, 2010 by Buddy the Plumber
It's not uncommon for us to get calls from folks telling us they are experiencing low pressure when they turn on their water.  There can be several causes for this, so I will give you a few of the most common.

If the pressure is low on both the cold and hot side of all of your plumbing fixtures then that usually has to do with a drop of pressure in your main water supply line. If you are on city water, then that could be a problem with your pressure regulator, a blockage in your line, or a problem with the city water pressure from the water meter. Another possibility is that you have a serious break or hole in your main water supply line.  If you are on a well the problem could be related to your well pump, pressure tank or pressure switch. Certainly a blockage or break in your main water line is also a possibility.

If you are only experiencing a lack of pressure at a particular faucet or appliance, or only on either the hot or cold side of the faucet, that is not a whole house water supply problem. Often the problem, for those living in hard water areas, is related to lime/calcium/scale build up in plumbing components. Scale can clog small openings in faucets and valves, or cause problems with seals in fixtures. If you are experiencing low water pressure only on the hot side of all your faucets, that is more likely to be a problem originating from you water heater.

As you can see there are a number of different scenarios to consider for a low water pressure plumbing problem.  If you feel that finding that problem and fixing it may be over your head, then you know who to call.

Better Call AttaBoy Plumbing Company!!!

AttaBoy - Your Local Plumbing Company

Tuesday, September 21, 2010 by Buddy the Plumber
Why should you choose AttaBoy Plumbing over other Plumbing companies? Well, here are a couple of very good reasons:

1.  We strive to be your favorite plumbers. Whether we're fixing a toilet, installing a water heater, or unclogging a drain, we want your experience with us to have been a good one because we want to be invited back next time you need plumbing. We expect our plumbers to be courteous, clean, on time, and expert technicians. You should too.

2.  If you live in the Indianapolis area (including Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, etc.) you should be calling a locally-owned company. Think about it, would you ever be able to communicate with the owner of one of the large national chain plumbing companies that have branches in Indy?  Does a company headquartered outside of Indiana really care about the Indianapolis community?  How much of the money you pay a nationally-owned plumbing company filters back into the local economy?

Now, when you need the best plumbing company in town (or nationally for that matter) you know who to call. . .  Better Call AttaBoy!

Your Plumber,

Buddy

High Water Bill in the Indianapolis Area? You May Need AttaBoy Plumbing

Tuesday, September 14, 2010 by Buddy the Plumber
0If you have noticed a sudden increase in your water bill and the water company denies any mistakes on their part, you may have water leaking somewhere in your home's plumbing system.  Here are a few common sources of high water bills and steps you can take to check for them:

Faucet leaks

Check for faucets that do not shut off all the way, including bathtubs, showers, and outside spigots. Be sure to check under sinks for leaks at shut-off valves, etc.

 Toilet leaks

Periodically check your toilets for water leaking from tank to bowl, here's how:

Place a few drops of food coloring in the tank - not the bowl.  A couple of tablespoons of instant coffee or Kool-Aid will work too.  After about thirty minutes check the water in the toilet bowl to see if it has any of the color of the dyed water from the tank in it.  If the water in the bowl has gone from clear to color, the tank   is leaking and the flapper and/or the flush valve may need to be replaced.

Underground leaks

To check for underground leaks or undetected leaks in the home:

Turn off the main water valve inside your home and then go outside and observe your water meter. If it is still turning you may have an underground leak. Alternatively, write down the numbers on your water meter at the beginning of a period when your home is going to be unoccupied for a few hours. Check the meter when you return; if the numbers have changed, there may be an out-of-sight leak somewhere inside your home or underground.

If you would prefer to have a plumbing professional help you with finding out why you have a high water bill, just give AttaBoy Plumbing a call.  We're all about leaks at AttaBoy Plumbing Company -- or rather, fixing them -- so whether it's a high water bill that get's your attention, or a leaking water heater, drain, or gas line, you know who to call.

Buddy

AttaBoy Plumbing Co - Central Indiana and elsewhere?

Friday, September 10, 2010 by Laura Behney

We are asked all the time if AttaBoy Plumbing is a national franchise.  Rest assured, that AttaBoy is locally owned and operated and not a part of any national franchise.  But we did find out a number of years ago that there are other AttaBoy Plumbing Companies in a few other states (NY, TX, LA and WA).  While we are in no way affiliated with those AttaBoy's, we think they've got a GREAT name!

Although they probably perform plumbing services and repairs in their neck of the woods, we are the only local AttaBoy plumber that tackles plumbing problems such as leaking water heaters, gas leaks, clogged drains and water softeners in Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, Noblesville, Westfield, Avon and Greenwood.  AND, the other companies don't have Buddy!

It's Trivia Time with your Though-full Plumber!

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 by Scott McCracken
Okay, I'm a sucker for trivia, so you'll just have to bear with me for the next few posts. This will be the first of three installments.

  1. Water pipes used to be made from Lead.  In fact, the word Plumbing (and plumb, and plumber) actually derive from the Latin word for Lead, plumbum.  (Incidentally, the periodic table element label for lead, Pb, is based on the same word).
  2. Pipes haven’t always been made of metal.  In the 1800s, both Boston and Montreal used wooden pipes; they were logs that were hollowed out and tapered at the ends.
  3. Lead solder was used even after lead was found to be harmful to humans, all the way through the 1980s.  It was believed that the amount of lead that could potentially leach into the water was too small to matter.  We’ve sinced smartened up.
  4. There are actually two common types of plungers – a toilet plunger and a sink/shower plunger.  Toilet plungers narrow at the bottom to fit into the toilet drain, while sink and shower plungers have a flat rim.
  5. Sir John “the john” Herrington is credited with inventing the flushable toilet in 1596.  He called it the “Ajax” a shortened version of “a jakes.”  “Jakes” was a common old slang for toilet at that time. Unfortunately, Sir John’s designation for the flusable toilet didn’t stick, but his name did.  Thomas Crapper (baptised 28 September 1836 – died 27 January 1910) was a plumber who founded Thomas Crapper & Co. in London. Contrary to widespread misconceptions, Crapper did not invent the water closet (toilet). He did, however, do much to increase the popularity of the toilet, and developed some important related inventions, such as the ballcock.
While you may have been able to make it through your day without knowing these not-so-important plumbing facts, it is important to know which plumbers to call if you have a clogged drain, gas leak, or water heater problems in Carmel, Fishers, Zionsville or Indianapolis. . . and that would be AttaBoy Plumbing Company.

Gas leak forces evacuation of Noblesville Walmart

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 by Laura Behney

Gas leaks are serious.  Thankfully, this was caught in time.  Here's the story from WTHR from last week:

Noblesville - The Walmart at 16865 Clover Road was evacuated overnight because of a gas leak.

Around 3:30 Wednesday morning, an employee moving boxes in the rear of the store punctured a gas line.

Employees heard a hissing sound and then smelled the natural gas odor.

The manager quickly called the fire department.  They evacuated all the employees and one woman who was shopping.

It took about an hour for the gas company to shut down the line.

Just before 5:00 a.m., the all clear was given and everyone was allowed back in the store.

So follow the actions of this "on the ball" employee....whenever you think you smell a gas leak, leave the premises and call the authorities.  And of course, if a repair needs to be done, that's a plumbing problem and AttaBoy Plumbing can fix it!

Isn't "Hot Water Heater" Redundant?

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 by Scott McCracken
Sometimes a client will call our AttaBoy Plumbing office and will say something like, "hi, this is Mr. So and So and I think my hot water heater in Noblesville is leaking." Now, if I remember correctly, my school teacher taught me that when we say something like, "I don't have no basement flooding in Zionsville" that to use both the word "don't", which is a negative, and the word "no", which is another negative, actually creates a totally different meaning to the sentence than the one intended. So, instead of meaning " I have a flooded basement in Zionsville" it means "I do not have a flooded basement in Zionsville."

Using that same idea, would not the phrase, "hot water heater" mean that the water that was being heated was already hot? Think about it. . . . . .or not.

If you live in Beech Grove, Fortville, Noblesville, or anywhere in the Indianapolis area and need your WATER HEATER repaired or replaced, or have any other plumbing concerns for that matter, just give AttaBoy Plumbing Company a call. Or maybe I should say, "Don't give no call to AttaBoy Plumbing."
